First Welsh Woman elected in key international role standing up for women

Joyce Watson AM has been elected as Vice Chair of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians.  Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, Joyce Watson, is believed to be the first Welsh woman to receive this prestigious recognition.  The Commonwealth Womens Parliamentarians network focuses on women’s representation and concerns across the Commonwealth.  Mrs Watson said “During these times when international alliances are more vital than ever, I am honoured to have been elected to taken on this vital role.

“Our Commonwealth partners are also working to tackle global concerns such as trafficking and sexual abuse, which I have campaigned on here in Wales.

“Women parliamentarians have a strong role to play in addressing these issues and I am keen to build on already strong links to make Wales’ voice heard around the globe”.

Joyce already represents the British Islands and Mediterranean Region on the international CWP Steering Committee  and was nominated by the African and Mediterranean regions.
